This year I am excited to begin my journey at Marietta High School teaching 9th grade and American Literature. I will miss Lindley Sixth Grade and hope that former students and parents will feel welcome to reach out. I have posted my new email address so that you can contact me easily. Another year has been successfully completed and all of my students have shown so much growth. I cannot wait to meet a wonderful new set of eager Sixth Graders who are as ready to learn as I am to teach! Over the summer, be sure to read LOTS to continue to raise those Lexile Levels. I cannot wait to see what this amazing group of students can accomplish!
--Mrs. Castellanos Hello All! I cannot believe that another year has come to a close! You have all learned, grown, and matured so much! I am so proud of the students that you have become! Always know that I am just an email away! I love helping my students continue their success however I can.
This week, we have no vocabulary. Some classes will be finishing their final. We will also be watching one of the following films: Anne of Avonlea, Anne with an E, The BFG, or The Wizard of Oz. I look forward to discussing the differences between the film and their novel inspiration, comparing and contrasting, and summarizing. It has been a pleasure and an honor to teach you all and I cannot wait to see what all you accomplish over the coming years! Please remember to READ over the summer! We have all grown and learned so much! The average Lexile Growth was 81, which is above the expected 70 points! I am so proud and impressed!
As a reward, I will not be giving any homework this week!!! :) This week, we will still be doing work, however! It is important to bring paper and a pen or pencil every day! We will use them each day!!! We are continuing to read Esperanza Rising and will be taking our final on Wednesday. Remember, if you passed your pre-test, you are exempted from the final!!! We are so excited to be DONE with testing!!! However, that does not mean that the school year is over! Our classes still have a lot to get done, and we all have a lot still to learn!
Vocabulary: 1.Abridged: shortened by condensing or rewriting 2.Anthropomorphism: the representation of objects as having human form 3.Character: a property that defines the individual nature of something 4.Comedy: a humorous incident or series of incidents 5.Conflict: an open clash between two opposing groups 6.Diction: the manner in which something is expressed in words 7.Fantasy: imagination unrestricted by reality On Monday, students will be completing their SRI test. On Tuesday, they will work on their Pretest. Students can test out of their finals by passing this test. Wednesday and Thursday, students will begin their new book, Esperanza Rising. Friday, students will complete their quizzes and participate in an activity involving the new book. Students will have a class set of the book to read in class, but cannot take it home. The Milestones are upon us and I believe that our students are very prepared! I cannot wait to see what you can do!!! This week: NO HOMEWORK!!! Monday and Tuesday, we will be analyzing the poetry of Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes in their poems "I Hear America Signing" and "I, Too." We will look at the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Whitman and the development of the Harlem Renaissance with Hughes. Students will be asked to compare and contrast these two poems using a Venn Diagram. Wednesday-Tuesday, as we take the Milestones, students will be watching "Anne of Green Gables," an award winning film based upon the literary classic of the same name. Students will complete a viewing guide analyzing the literary elements of the story as they watch. Students are invited to read the novel for extra credit! Vocabulary: Because many students are busy working on Milestones study guides, I am only giving five vocabulary words. Text Structure: How the information within a written text is organized. Text Feature: All of the components of a story or article that are not the main body of text. These include the table of contents, index, glossary, headings, bold words, sidebars, pictures and captions, and labeled diagrams. Expository Writing: An essay written to explain a topic without personal opinions. This is also called an informative essay. Theme: The main idea of the whole literary work, answers the question "what is the work about?” Central Idea: The key point made in a written passage; the chief topic. Hello All and Happy Spring Break! Please be sure to complete the packets given to you at school! They are for a grade and due Friday the 14th of April. I hope that everyone had a very safe and fun break! This week, we will continue to prepare for the Milestones through working through testing skills, expository writing, reading passages/answering questions, looking at text features, and working on important vocabulary that is likely to be on the Milestones! Hello and Welcome to our last week before Spring Break!
I know that we are all excited for our break; however, we still be to focus for our Milestones! Vocabulary: Dialogue: These are the words spoken by characters in a literary work. Informal language: This is what people use in everyday speech. It usually consists of fairly short sentences and simple vocabulary. The casual language we use every day. Formal language: This is the standard language of written communication, proper speeches, and presentations; may not use contractions or slang. Prefix: This can be added to the beginning of a word to change the word's meaning. Suffix: This can be added to the end of a word to change the word's meaning. We have a lot to cover this week, so please be sure that you come to class everyday ready to learn! We will work on finishing up our one on one conferences, reading fiction and nonfiction texts, writing narrative, expository, and narrative pieces, and will get ready for your Milestone's study guides!
